Learning Objectives: Conducting an effective workforce reduction is a multifaceted and challenging task. In this case, an emphasis will be placed on students thinking critically about the various decision points in conducting a workforce reduction. Legal, strategic, talent management, and ethical concepts will be explored. Students will devise action and communication plans. Sample solutions to the case will be provided.
>Case Administration: The case is best utilized in small group or small lecture/seminar format. Some familiarity with basic human resource concepts is assumed (e.g., the WARN Act and early retirement). If the students read the case in class, the case can be completed in a 50-minute period. The case will take approximately 15 minutes to read. If students read the case outside of class and record their responses to the discussion questions, the case can be analyzed in 30 minutes.
