A Case Study of Disaster Management and Social Media
A Case Study about Disaster Management and Social Media
Executive Summary: It has been at times a challenging path, but through good will and team work on the part of the community of Queensland, we have established what I believe to be a best practice example of the use of social media by a government department for both engaging with the public and informing front line colleagues in times of a disaster. In recognizing this, I felt it appropriate to document our experience so others could learn from and apply some of the lessons we learned.
Background: Police Media allowed interest in its social media accounts to initially grow by word of mouth keeping growth to a steady and manageable level. This organic growth rate allowed the media team to steadily develop their social media skills and procedures. It also gave the team the time to educate and guide its online community about appropriate behavior on its social media sites. While initial responsibility for the maintenance of these accounts fell to a few select individuals within the team, management was able to gradually introduce social media to everyday processes so that all members grew to be comfortable with uploading information and moderating the accounts. Background: Nestled between thousands of acres of open space and parkland in Lorton, Virginia, is the community of Laurel Hill, home to the Laurel Hill Tritons swim team. The Tritons are a division of the 50-year Northern Virginia Swim League, and 2011 marks their sixth year…
Challenge: With actual team training and activities run by parents and other volunteers, it is Theresa Phillips’s role to handle the rest. This means getting word out about registration and events, organizing volunteers, processing and tracking registrations, maintaining files on participants, assigning participants the proper slots according to age, and of course processing and tracking funds…
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UW26Gn2BY08&w=560&h=315]
Solution: When Theresa took over as Team Rep for the Tritons she had no practical experience with swim team management and no idea how much work it would entail. She began talking with Active Network, Endurance about its swimming club registration software, and having had previous experience with workflow processes, she knew the power of effective management and how Active might help. Just before the new swim season started Theresa made her decision…

How Operations Research Drives Success at Proctor & Gamble
You can’t just call it a company anymore — it’s more of an economy unto itself. With $76 billion in annual sales, 138,000 employees, and operations in more than 80 countries, Procter & Gamble, the world’s biggest consumer goods company, has grown to such epic proportions that economists consider it a bellwether of consumer spending and confidence.
Three decades ago, P&G’s cadre of data analysts was programming simplistic queries into mainframe computers to determine, for instance, the best time of day to deploy television advertising. It mostly trusted executives’ instincts when deciding when to launch a new product or how much inventory to put on store shelves. These days, thanks to exponentially more powerful computers, data retrieval and storage, and new generations of software, it’s a central army of “quants” at P&G who are arguably as important to its overall success as those storied P&G brand managers.
