A Case Study on Reducing Costs through Production and Supply Chain Management

Case Study about Reducing Costs through Production and Supply Chain Management

Introduction: IKEA, the Swedish home products retailer, is known for its good-quality, inexpensive products, which are typically sold at prices 30–50% below those of its competitors. While the price of products from other companies continues to rise over time, IKEA claims that its retail prices have been reduced by a total of 20% over the last four years.

Case Study on Production and Supply Chain Management

At IKEA, the process of cost reduction starts at product conception and continues throughout the process of design, sourcing of materials and components, production, and distribution. For example, the “Bang” mug has been redesigned many times to realize shipping cost savings. Originally, 864 mugs would fit into a pallet. After redesign a pallet held 1,280 mugs, and with a further redesign 2,024 mugs could be squeezed into a pallet, reducing shipping costs by 60%.

A Case Study of Bottleneck Management in Discrete Batch Production

A Case Study about Bottleneck Management in Discrete Batch Production

Abstract: Today, production planning and scheduling becomes very important part of production management because companies have to react to dynamic market conditions and rising customers´ requirements for shorter delivery times, lower prices and better quality and services. They can use a lot of sophisticated methods and approaches to make their planning processes more efficient and thus meet growing customers´ requirements. However, using these new approaches is not so easy in all types of production systems.

Introduction: One of the key activities of production management is manufacturing planning and scheduling that can greatly influence production performance. Mainly today, when changing market environment causes a rise in complexity as well as intensity of production planning, efficient planning system is often a key weapon for remaining competitive. Already Tomas Bata, who founded the world-famous shoe company on the beginning of 20th century, regarded production planning as one of the most important parts of business management. He was gradually followed by next famous managers who started to deal with production planning problems more frequently as they perceived its importance.

A Case Study of Agent based approach to Mass-Oriented Production Planning

A Case Study about Agent based approach to Mass-Oriented Production Planning

Abstract: This paper discusses the potential of multi-agent planning techniques in the production planning domain, with special focus to mass-oriented production. The research presented in the paper has been centred around ExPlanTech – a specific implementation of production planning multi-agent system. Suitability of ExPlanTech for mass-oriented and project-driven manufacturing is discussed general in the paper. Applicability of multi-agent concepts is demonstrated on a multi-agent planning architecture and production planning case study at Skoda Auto Engine Plant.

Case Study on Production Planning

In manufacturing the agent systems have been used in production control and project-oriented production management. While in manufacturing control the main added value provided by agent technology is in their control decentralisation, flexibility and robustness, agent-based project driven production planning provides mainly locally and globally balanced planning efficiency and very efficient replanning capability. In our article, we report on an extension of the agent planning techniques towards the mass-production domain. The experience we present was collected during the analysis, design and implementation of the actual planning system that is currently in the processes of deployment in SkodaAUTO engine production factory.

Usability of quantitative modelling in operations strategy decision making

Strategy issues are always highly complex, both from a technical and an organizational perspective. One well-established way of dealing with complexity has been to construct (quantified) models of the issues at stake. In the field of production and operations management (POM), quantitative modelling has long been a normal and well-accepted academic way of dealing with complex issues (cf. Meredith et al., 1989). However, the use of models for strategic issues has been rare in POM. Read more to know whether the model can be extended further…

Case Study on Production and Operations Management

You have the opportunity to invest INR 100 billion for your company to develop a jet engine for commercial aircrafts. Development will span 5 years. The final product costing Rs. 500 million / unit could reach a sales potential, eventually of Rs. 2500 billion. The new engine can be placed in service 5 years from now, but only if it qualifies four years from now for certification clearing commercial use and only if it meets America’s Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) ever tightening standards for noise reduction.

Production and Operations Management

Certification also has to be obtained from India’s Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). There is competition from world-class manufacturers like Pratt and Whitney and Rolls Royce who are developing competing engines. If you decide to proceed with the project, you must also determine where the new engines will be produced and develop the manufacturing facilities. If you decline to proceed, your company could invest its resources elsewhere and based on its track record, get attractive returns. Click here to read more…
