Case Study of Orica

Orica has a history of setting and achieving challenging energy eficiency targets. It has a worldwide corporate target to reduce energy use per tonne of product by 15 per cent between 2004 and 2010 and was one of the irst signatories to the Australian Government’s Greenhouse Challenge Program in 1996. With this background, and as a large user of energy – with an expected 16 petajoules (PJ) to be used globally in 2007 – it was only natural that Orica volunteered in 2005 to be one of 25 trial companies for the Energy Eficiency Opportunities program. At a corporate level, Orica saw the program as an opportunity to assist the company to achieve its 2010 energy reduction target, and to support a ‘beyond compliance’ approach to energy eficiency legislation. Dulux Paints going green: Reduction in Industrial Waste

Dulux has been involved with the manufacture and marketing of paint and related systems in Australia since 1918 and is the largest manufacturer of quality paint products in Australia. Dulux is part of Orica, in particular its Consumer Products business. Orica manufactures and supplies industrial and specialty chemicals, commercial explosives and mining chemicals, as well as consumer products. Powder coating is used to apply a durable surface to numerous consumer goods, architectural components, appliances and many other metal items, produced on industrial coating lines. The generation of waste powder in the manufacturing process has been minimized in the past by Dulux at its Clayton manufacturing plant, through optimization of milling parameters. This process achieves over 96% materials efficiency, resulting in approximately 190 tonne of waste powder ‘fines’ being disposed to landfill each year. The waste powder ‘fines’ are classified as Prescribed Industrial Waste (PIW). Dulux has identified a new technology to further increase the material efficiency of the powder coating manufacturing process that enables the recovery of waste powder coat ‘fines’, and could potentially support the recovery of waste powder coatings from applicators’ facilities and its’ recycling back into product…read how Dulux did it
