Case Study on Bunker Fuel

Case Study about Bunker Fuel

Introduction: Bunker Fuel is traded in US Dollars world-wide, every major port has its own set of rates and therefore it becomes quite complicated to write a comparative study on an alternative to the US Dollar as a reference currency for bunker fuel. For this reason we have taken the pricing system of WTSA WTSA has a system of bunker fuel pricing and different surcharges (e.g. refrigerated containers) that is clearly explained on their website. Our starting point has prices in US Dollars; these prices represent our starting point. When we turn US Dollars prices into Wocu1prices we introduce an element of volatility that needs to be considered when we look at the results of this case study. The exchange rate USD/Wocu has its own volatility and therefore any Wocu result would be better if we could have a starting point for the Wocu without that element of volatility

Case Study on Bunker Fuel

The availability of data in the WTSA website allows us to use what is essentially a pricing structure aimed at the US Dollar market for a generic trend for bunker fuel prices across different markets. This case study deals with bunker fuel in an oversimplified way; there is no consideration of surcharges and of different pricing for different agreements. However, the principles behind the case we are discussing remain the same whatever the agreement and it is safe to assume that the surcharges (priced in US Dollars themselves) will behave according to similar logic. Although the shipping world is fairly used to use the US Dollar as their main working currency, the clients of shipping lines ultimately pay in their local currency. We shall show how using the Wocu means a reduced volatility and therefore easier and more reliable cost forecasts. Easier and more reliable assessments of future shipping costs may be one of the decisive factors in the decision to enter new markets. Keep reading..

Case Study of Upward Influence Strategies

Study about Upward Influence Strategies

Abstract: In organizations with emphasis on transparency, flexibility, informal talks and open door policies, subordinate-superior relationships and communication patterns are a significant deviation from the norm. This study analyzes transcripts of 23 pieces of interviews for identification of Upward Influence (UI) strategies in a multi-national FMCG company, with aforementioned cultural traits. Extensively discussed strategies like, imitation, reason and logic, and upward appeal, were identified through conversation analysis. Two new strategies, emerged in the course of the analysis, viz. reasoned aggression and nonchalance. The study describes the choice and use of UI strategies in this particular organization. It proceeds to discuss the need for improved understanding of UI strategies in isolation and combination, and in relation to culture, team affiliations, and interpersonal relationships.

Case Study on Upward Influence Strategies

Introduction: Influence is an attempt made by an agent (individual) to sway the target to a mode/manner of thinking that is in sync with the intentions of the agent. It has been described as “getting one’s way” (Kipnis, Schmidt and Wilkinson, 1980). Influence is of two types – downward and upward. The superior’s attempt to affect the subordinate is referred to as downward influence; when there is a reversal of the process it is known as upward influence. The focus of this paper is study of upward influence (UI) strategies in a multi-national FMCG organization, through an analysis of talk patterns. Deluga and Perry (1991) describe UI as an attempt made by the subordinate to secure a desired response from the superior. It is an intentional and strategic choice made by the individual and is directed at someone higher in the organisation, who is more powerful (Waldron, 1999). Keep reading…

A Case Study on The Fragile Flower of Local Democracy: Decentralization

A Case Study about The Fragile Flower of Local Democracy: Decentralization

Debates over how much participation democracy should entail, which level of government is most effective, and the nature of the relationship among participation, decentralization, and democracy have often been intertwined. Simplifying, one group of scholars views decentralization and participation as linked, and sees their combination as the key to improving government performance and activating citizens, thus deepening democracy. Another group holds instead that one, the other, or both together endanger democracy by leading to ungovernability and citizen frustration. Before summarizing these arguments, let me provide a general definition of decentralization as the transfer of either resources, responsibilities for public services.

Case Study on Local Democracy

Decision-making power away from the central government either to lower levels of government, to dispersed central state agencies, or to the private sector (either businesses or nongovernmental organizations). Decentralization and participation are separate but complementary concepts, in that the former is often viewed as a necessary step to achieve the latter. Although the references to decentralization in the literature cited below typically refer to that from national to state or municipal governments, rather than from municipal to lower tiers (as in the case of Montevideo), the logic behind the arguments about the relationship between decentralization, participation, and democracy remains essentially the same..Keep reading…

A Case Study on Analytical Analysis of the Inverted Pendulum Real-Time Control System

Abstract: An inverted pendulum has been used as the controlled device in a prototype real-time control system employing the Simplex architecture. In this report, we address the control issues of such a system in an analytic way. In particular, an analytic model of the system is derived; control algorithms are designed for the baseline control, experimental control and safety control based on the concept of analytic redundancy; the safety region is obtained as the stability region of the system under the safety control; and the control switching logic is established to provide fault tolerant functionality.

A Case Study on Analytical Analysis of the Inverted Pendulum Real-Time Control System

Introduction: An inverted pendulum has been used as a controlled device in a prototype control system employing the Simplex architecture. As shown in Figure 1, the physical system consists of a cart, driven by a DC motor, and a pendulum attached to the cart. The cart can move along a horizontal track, and the pendulum is able to rotate freely in the range of [ 30 ,30 ] o o − with respect to vertical in the vertical plane parallel to the track. There is no direct control applied to the pendulum…

Methods in Case Study Analysis

Introduction:

The use of case studies as a research methodology has grown in recent years because of the rapid changes in the health system today and the inability of traditional data sources to answer important questions. Many users of case study information value the data, but are uncomfortable with the small number of cases included in any given study and the uncertainty associated with interpreting the data. As more researchers pursue this methodology, it is important to recognize that numerous methodological strategies related to implementing such research can enhance the reliability and validity of the findings.

Methods in Case Study Analysis

This report addresses a number of methodological issues related to conducting case study analyses. The first section discusses the design of case studies: why they are done, the importance of theory, defining and selecting cases for study and designing the instrument for gathering data.

The second section considers the analysis and interpretation of qualitative data and describes the “horizontal” logic at the core of case study analysis. The use of data displays are described and an example is included. This section also describes the method of replication for analyzing themes across multiple cases. Case Study on European Sustainable Development Network

Introduction: The overall aim of this case study is to stress the importance of long-term perspectives (as a principle of sustainable development) in financial markets, and to try to identify barriers thereof and opportunities to overcome these barriers. Thus, the study highlights principles related to long-term thinking within sustainable development and, furthermore, explains the rationale of short-term oriented thinking by actors in financial markets.

Explaining different time perspectives: Sustainable development and financial markets

When considering the logic of time horizons understood by today’s financial capital markets within the topic of sustainable development, two contradictory views clash together. Some key assumptions on sustainable development and financial capital markets outlined by Schmidheiny & Zorraquin (1996) illustrate the deep changes that have to be made so that financial markets encourage rather than discourage sustainable development..

Case Study on Foundation for Prader-Willi Research

The Foundation for Prader-Willi Research (FPWR) organized with just 40 families wishing to fund research projects for Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS). PWS is a rare genetic disorder that historically received little attention and support from the medical research community and FPWR sought to change that condition.

Case Study on Ficosnet

The Challenge: David Parrilla, Ficos Open Development manager, explains “Our old financial package was RPG based and had evolved from the System/38 to the AS/400. Although it was functionally complete after 10 years, maintenance was cumbersome and the user interface was unattractive.” “Customers and prospects wanted a more open solution. Even loyal AS/400 shops do not want to be locked into an AS/400 only solution nowadays.”…
