Research from Blockbuster’s local franchisee, Southern Stores, Inc., in Memphis, Tennessee, showed that Blockbuster’s business was becoming “hit-driven.” In other words, consumer awareness of the newest release availability was needed to motivate a customer to make a store visit. However, the research also showed that once customers arrived at the stores, they tended to expand their rental choices to include older movie and video game releases.
