A Case Study on Engineering Ethics

A software engineer in the aerospace division of Occidental Engineering, a large engineering firm. For the past two years he has been working as a test engineer for Operation Safe Skies, a project to build a prototype of the next generation air traffic control system. This project, which is funded by a contract from the Federal Aviation Agency (FAA), is a very important one for Occidental.

A Case Study on Engineering Ethics

With all the cutbacks in defense spending, the aerospace division has been losing business. The Safe Skies project has provided much needed business, and could lead to a much larger contract if successful. Mindful of its strategic importance, the company had bid very aggressively for the original contract. In fact they had “low-balled” it, bidding less than it would take to do the work properly. They felt that was the only way they could beat out their competitors, who were just as hungry for the work. Click here to read more…

A Case Study on Delta

Background: Besides carrying passengers, Delta Airlines also transports cargo throughout the world. Cargo is stored in containers called “Cans” which travel in the belly of an aircraft. The manufacturers of the Cans print a unique FAA registered, nine digit tracking code label which was adhered onto each container.

A Case Study on Delta

Challenges: Computerization would make the process quicker and more accurate. To automate, Delta wanted to re-label the Cans with bar code labels to scan upon arrival and departure. Since over 100,000 containers were already traveling in the system, the labels had to be printed and adhered at each individual airport. Click here to read more on Delta..

Case Study on Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)

The FAA, the federal agency responsible for regulation of all U.S. civil aviation, was undergoing a massive project to upgrade the national air traffic control system. Their TAMR Program selected EcoSys as the Earned Value Management System (EVMS) and Cost Controls system to successfully meet the challenges inherent in such a large endeavor including: full project lifecycle cost controls (from estimates through delivery), managing program adjustments through accurate and predictive performance data, and adaptable EVM rules while still adhering to ANSI 748 audit requirements. Case Study on Production and Operations Management

You have the opportunity to invest INR 100 billion for your company to develop a jet engine for commercial aircrafts. Development will span 5 years. The final product costing Rs. 500 million / unit could reach a sales potential, eventually of Rs. 2500 billion. The new engine can be placed in service 5 years from now, but only if it qualifies four years from now for certification clearing commercial use and only if it meets America’s Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) ever tightening standards for noise reduction.

Production and Operations Management

Certification also has to be obtained from India’s Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). There is competition from world-class manufacturers like Pratt and Whitney and Rolls Royce who are developing competing engines. If you decide to proceed with the project, you must also determine where the new engines will be produced and develop the manufacturing facilities. If you decline to proceed, your company could invest its resources elsewhere and based on its track record, get attractive returns. Click here to read more…
