Over the past twenty years more women have shared their experiences generating greater awareness on the widespread problem of domestic violence.The increased attention has elicited a number of responses from different actorsseeking to decrease violence against women. Nongovernmental organizations, legal experts and international organizations have advocated for governments to address this widespread issue as part of a multidimensional approach to end domestic violence.
This paper will specifically address the political, economic and cultural factors that motivate a government to legislate on this issue.
