Climate Change, Wildlife, and Wildlands: Chesapeake Bay and Assateague Island Rising Seas, Changing Climate

Poplar Island’s story is not unique. The University of Maryland’s Laboratory for Coastal Research found that at least 13 islands in Chesapeake Bay have disappeared entirely since the region was first described and mapped by Europeans. Many more islands are in danger of drowning as the sea continues to rise. Even Captain Smith’s namesake island near the mouth of the Potomac, which is large enough to support three small towns and a population of close to 400 people, has lost some 30 percent of its land since 1850.
