Case Study on Pro-Poor Water and Wastewater Management in Small Towns

Study about Pro-Poor Water and Wastewater Management in Small Towns

Kusuma Bangsa is part of Pemecutan Kaja Village, West Denpasar District, which is one of the most densely populated areas of Denpasar. Most of the residents come from elsewhere in Bali or from East Java and Lombok Island, and have lived in the area for more than five years, generally leasing rooms or houses on a monthly or annual basis. Many householders earn their livelihood as street sellers, small entrepreneurs and construction workers, or they have homebased businesses. Most of the women stay home to care for children and the house. Monthly family incomes range from IDR500,000

Case Study on Wastewater Management

About 80 per cent of rented rooms or houses in Kusuma Bangsa have small bathrooms and toilets without proper septic tanks. Before implementation of the project, wastewater was discharged to a nearby stream. During floods, rising backwater from the stream pushed wastewater and rubbish into houses. The area experienced a high rate of diarrhoea and other water-borne diseases, especially among children aged below five years, due to a lack of proper sanitation facilities and frequent flooding. Health costs and transport to health centres were a burden for the children’s mothers. Keep reading…

A Case Study on Waste Prevention

A Study about Achieving Success With Waste Prevention

The Avondale Condominium Development was a project of Tridel. The construction firm responsible for project management was Deltera Inc. Highrise Drywall was sub-contracted through a collective bargaining agreement (CBA) to supply, install and tape the gypsum wallboard as well as manage all their site wastes. Prior to the study, drywall was disposed of in a mixed-construction wastes bin, where it eventually was landfilled in Michigan, U.S.A., 400 kms away.

Case Study on Waste Prevention

During the study, drywall off-cuts were source separated and recycled for a reduced tipping fee at New West Gypsum, 50 kms away and remanufactured into new drywall by BPB, a drywall supplier to Tridel. In this instance, due to the CBA, Deltera was charged a unit rate common to all projects in this area and the cost of waste management was embedded in this unit price. As a result, any cost reductions achieved through recycling off-cuts, as opposed to landfilling, would directly benefit the contractor, not the project manager. Keep reading…

A Case Study in Waste Management

The concept of waste management continues to gain traction within the foodservice industry. That’s probably due to the fact that better management of food waste can positively impact a business in multiple ways.Namely by lowering operating costs and lessening the facility’s impact on the environment.

For its two corporate dining facilities in Hillsboro, Ore., Intel worked with its contract feeder – Bon Appetit Management Company – to change its food preparation, menu development, and waste management processes in an effort to reduce their pre-consumer waste; largely caused by overproduction, spoilage, exceeding expiration dates, and excess trimmings. The result was a 47 percent reduction of food waste by weight as well as a 13.2 percent reduction in food costs per meal.

Trying to encourage other businesses to follow a similar path, the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality is highlighting Intel as a case study as part of a special report. Click here to read more…

A Case Study for Solid Waste Management and Environmental Justice

A  Study about Solid Waste Management and Environmental Justice

The School of Public Affairs (SPA) at Baruch College launched the Center for Nonprofit Strategy and Management (CNSM) to address the needs of nonprofit organizations that are pivotal to the health and well-being of New York City. The CNSM community of professors and practitioners takes seriously the relationship between research and practice—practice informs the faculty’s development of theory as much as theory informs their approach to practice. Faculty members engage directly and vigorously with area nonprofits and the institutions that support them and command a wide range of expertise. The School has substantial strength in organization theory, budgeting and finance, public communication, advocacy and lobbying, technology diffusion, population studies, strategic planning, housing policy, human services management, and health care policy.

Case Study on Solid Waste Management

SPA and the CNSM offer a wide range of academic and non-credit programs and services that address the complex issues facing the nonprofit sector, including strengthening leadership and building a pipeline of future leaders. These programs include a Master of Public Administration with a concentration in nonprofit management, monthly seminars for nonprofit professionals, conferences, the annual Consulting Day, the annual nonprofit executive outlook survey, the Emerging Leaders Program, and support for and collaboration with various “umbrella organizations. A Case Study of the Municipal Waste Management Industry in South Africa

A Case Study about the Municipal Waste Management Industry in South Africa

Executive Summary: The ability of workers to exercise the right to freedom of association (establish or join organizations of their own choosing without fear of reprisal or intimidation) is critical to ensuring that workers access and benefit from rights enshrined in labour laws and collective bargaining agreements. Lack of voice at work is marginalizing economic actors in the labour market and in society at large, and is indeed facilitating their relegation to the informal economy.

Case Study on Municipal Waste Management

The municipal waste management sector in South Africa has undergone significant transformations in recent years, largely as a result of externalization. To date research on, and analysis of, these changes and their implication for workers have been limited. The main objective of the paper is to expand the knowledge base on working conditions and work arrangements in the sector, with a view to helping unions organize and improve conditions of workers therein, regardless of where they work and the type of contract they have. keep reading…

Case Study on Decentralized Wastewater Management

Case Study about Decentralized Wastewater Management

Executive Summary: More than one in five homes in the United States are served by individual or small, clustered wastewater systems, which collectively treat more than four billion gallons of sewage every day. Proper management of that vast, decentralized wastewater treatment infrastructure helps to protect drinking water sources and helps to keep our waters clean so that people can swim and fish in our streams, rivers, lakes, and oceans.

Case Study on Decentralized Wastewater Management

EPA intends this document to serve as a resource for decision makers in rural, exurban, and suburban communities across the country who want to provide effective, efficient wastewater treatment. Local decision makers know the wastewater management challenges they face: 1) in existing developed areas with old, undersized, or malfunctioning septic systems; and 2) in newer developments that need high-performance treatment facilities to protect groundwater and nearby lakes, rivers, streams, wetlands, and coastal waters. A Case Study in Poznan Waste-to-Energy Project

Case study about Poznan Waste-to-Energy Project

Introduction: This case study is part of a series being prepared by EPEC on projects that have combined or have attempted to combine EU funds with a public-private partnership (PPP) structure. It provides background information on the Poznan waste-to-energy project (the “Project”) in Poland, highlights the strategy adopted by the local public authority in relation to both procurement and the EU grant application and provides insights on ways of addressing known challenges in blending EU funds and PPPs. This case study looks into a project that is still being structured and negotiated. As the Project evolves, EPEC will report on the progress made on the issues raised, providing “live” insight into the evolution of the Project.

Case Study on Poznan Waste-to-Energy Project

Project Background: In order to comply with new national and European environmental standards on waste disposal, a number of Polish cities and regions have in the current programming period (2007-2013) commenced project preparation for the construction of waste incinerators. The projects in question are consistent with national and regional strategic documents and the objectives of the Polish Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment 2007-2013 (OPI&E), making them eligible for EU grant co-financing, with grant amounts reserved for their co-financing. Up to PLN 352 million (approximately EUR 84 million) has been preallocated to the Project by the Polish managing authority under the relevant Priority Axis.

A Case Study of Preparing a Waste Prevention Programme

Case Study about Preparing a Waste Prevention Programme

National waste prevention programmes should support Member States in decoupling economic growth from the environmental impacts of waste generation. With this in mind, short, mid-term, and long-term targets may be useful. The stabilisation of waste generation is a key preliminary aim, followed by targets for absolute reductions over five to twenty years. Progress should be monitored and stakeholders engaged throughout the development and implementation of programmes

Case Study on Waste Prevention Programme

The objective of this study specifically is to clarify important concepts in waste prevention for national, regional and local authorities and to direct users to the most suitable waste prevention options for a given type of waste and administrative level. In addition to this objective, this document suggests a framework to help national authorities develop a waste prevention programme.
