Introduction: The India Growth Oriented Micro-Enterprise Development (GMED) program is sponsored by the U.S. Agency for International Development and managed by ACDI/VOCA, a Washington D.C. based international development consultancy. The program began in October 2004. Its goal is to develop initiatives leading to increases in employment through fostering the growth of micro and small enterprises. After several permutations, GMED management decided to concentrate program efforts on linking smallholder vegetable and fruit farmers to firms engaged in the organized food retail sector.
