Case Study of Yangzhou Chengde Steel Tube Company

Carlyle invested in Yangzhou Chengde Steel Tube Company in March 2007, becoming a strategic partner with the company’s founder, Mr. Zhang Huai-De. In January 2010, Carlyle exited the investment through a sale to a U.S. strategic player introduced by Carlyle. Located in Yangzhou city, in Jiangsu Province, Chengde Steel has a 20-year history as a manufacturer of large-diameter, seamless steel pipe products. At the time of Carlyle’s investment, Chengde Steel was a subsidiary of a larger parent corporation. Recognizing the value of Chengde Steel, Carlyle partnered with the company’s chairman and founder to form a new strategic venture, resulting in a spin-off of Chengde Steel into a new, independent company.
