Abstract: Increasing demand from consumers plus European Union (EU) legislation has raised awareness within the automotive production sector of the urgent need to reduce the environmental impacts from the three main stages in vehicle life – car manufacture, car use and end-of life vehicle processing.



Total Product System Concept

Introduction: For readers who are unfamiliar with it, the smartTM car is a two-seat city-car. Major events in the development of this project, including its extension to new smartTM models. The production of very small automobiles has a long history in Europe, partly because of the constraints of ancient street layouts and as a means for bringing car ownership within the reach of lower income households. Recent developments reflect increasing concern for the environment, and increasing congestion in many European cities.
